Case study
The National Transportation Institute
NTI surveys driver pay and benefits across the country, aggregates it, and sells it to trucking companies who use it to keep their pay packages competitive. The data is the product, and it’s so good that customers come back for more cities every year.
What they wanted was a better way to deliver it. Orders were fulfilled by hand, with someone at NTI compiling a spreadsheet of the cities that customer had bought.
We built them a Power BI product on top of it. An HR leader picks their variables, things like truck type, route type, pay type and years of experience, and sees straight away how their own pay compares against city, state and national benchmarks. Subscriptions control access, so each customer gets the cities and reports they’ve paid for and can add more whenever they want.
NTI now sells access per city, per report, with separate dashboards for private fleet, dedicated fleet and technicians. Same data they always had. A faster way to buy it, and a quicker route from opening it to acting on it.

Questions we get asked
Do we need a data warehouse first?
Often no. Power BI connects natively to a long list of systems, including SQL Server, Dataverse, Snowflake, BigQuery, Salesforce and SharePoint, so if your data sits in one or two places we can usually go straight at it. A warehouse becomes worth it when you’re combining several systems, when refreshes start dragging, or when two teams keep producing different totals for the same quarter. We’ll tell you which of those you’re in. We won’t sell you a warehouse you don’t need yet.
We already have Power BI reports. Can you fix those instead of starting over?
Usually, and it’s cheaper. We’ll look at what’s there first. Sometimes the model is sound and the presentation is the whole problem, which is a quick job. Sometimes the model has issues that will keep producing wrong numbers no matter what you put on top of it, and starting again is genuinely faster. You’ll know which before you commit to anything.
Power BI or Tableau?
They do the same job. If you’re already a Microsoft shop, Power BI is the shorter path and the cheaper license. Tableau gives us more room when design is doing real work. We build in both, neither one pays us, so you’ll get a straight answer.
Who owns it when you’re done?
You do. Files, documentation, workspace, all of it. We hand over and train your team, and nothing is built in a way that requires us to come back.
How long does this take?
Most first projects run three to four weeks. A single focused dashboard is quicker. Sorting out an estate that’s been neglected for two years takes longer. You get the scope and the price before we start either way.
